The Patente B theory exam in English: how it works and how to prepare
The Patente B is Italy's driving licence for cars. To get it you pass two exams: the theory exam and then the practical driving test. This page explains the theory exam — and how to prepare for it even if your Italian is not ready yet.
The shape of the theory exam
- You are shown 30 statements and for each one you decide: true or false.
- In Italian these two options are called Vero (true) and Falso (false).
- You have 20 minutes.
- At most 3 wrong answers are allowed; a fourth error means failing.
- The exam is on a computer, and it is in Italian only.
That last point is the real barrier for most immigrants. In Guidami the question text always stays in the official Italian — with the translation right beside it — so that on exam day the wording feels familiar, not foreign.
What the exam asks about
- Warning, mandatory, prohibitory and information road signs
- Road markings, traffic lights and police signals
- Right of way at intersections and roundabouts
- Speed limits, safety distance and overtaking
- Stopping and parking
- Vehicle documents, insurance and the roadworthiness inspection
- Alcohol, drugs, fatigue and responsible driving
- Passenger safety, first aid, pollution and fuel consumption
Why translation alone is not enough
Exam statements are short but precise. One word — "always", "never", "only", "even" — can turn a true statement into a false one. The winning method is to learn the rule and to get used to the Italian sentence shape. In the app, after every answer you get an explanation in your own language, so you see exactly which word decided it.
How Guidami prepares you
- Every official theory chapter explained in English, Persian and Arabic.
- A question bank built from the official source (the Listato A/B), with the official road-sign pictures — not drawings.
- A free Chapter 0 that teaches exam technique: key verbs, traps and strategy.
- A short test after every lesson, and full 30-question mock exams in exam conditions.
- Your mistakes are collected and repeated until they stick.
